Easy wash Cushion Covers

I am a big fan of cushions, now what girl isn't. What I dread is the Laundry/Dry cleaning part of handling cushions that are used daily - On couches, your favourite chair, the reading nook and so on..

While I experimented with some of the ready made stuff available at most HOME DECOR stores - I especially don't like the cushions made of non natural fibers. They seem to cause such "heat" when just sitting near the. Then there is the added "Dry Clean" cost as most of them look like rag cloth if put into the washing machine.

I was looking for some easy washable, cool, comfortable cloth that one can make cushions out of, and that's when it hit me  - The cotton/"mul" fabrics that we make kurtis/salwars(clothes) out of that are easily washable and breathable fabrics! They will look different from the run of the mill cushion covers that most households would have already bought and should be less expensive than the high end stores that sell cotton and hand printed something or the other that most "society wives" are seen shopping at..

So, scouring some wholesale cloth markets, I targeted cloth pieces that were almost last of the bale, or "odd quantity left", and some were of course worth being cut from a bale due to their throwaway prices!

Went to a "small time tailor" in Mumbai who does furnishings, and bed covers etc at my parents home for quite some time now and gave him the idea of what I wanted out of the cloth!   Voila. My cushions were ready.

Love the vibrant colours and the fact that they can be machine washed, YAY!

Cloth Bags anyone ?

As a kid, we have had little cloth bags for carrying milk, small pouches to carry lunch(like a "POTLI", bag with a string)all made by my grandma out of skirts/dresses, that we kids had grown out of.

With the recent "ban on Plastic bags" initiative in Bangalore - while shopping, one has to carry one's own cloth/jute bag, or pay for plastic bags. A commendable effort to bring awareness on the Eco friendly nature of recycle-able bags.

I had an idea. Some of our used/old night dresses could get up-cycled this way.

We used some of our old night wear and got a tailor to make these bags for us. 6 bags from 3 Nightdresses ! They fit so snugly in one's handbag/Purse. And each one carried about 2-3 kilos of weight! Tra la la la la!

Planters out of recycled glass and other utensils

I love using clear glass as planters and as vases for flowers. I Also find use for old brass utensils that can double up beautifully with proper imagination.

Glass bottles looking for beautiful as they lend themselves as planters in their new avatar

Or Brass utensils like an old Kalash or this brass server for curries and like can be easily reused as planters.

The other coloured glass bottles can lend themselves as Vases for colourful flowers

A lovely weekend in Bekal

We had a lovely  weekend in Bekal in Kasargodh district in Kerala. A way to combine work and some fun in the weekend. We booked ourselves  at the Vivanta by Taj, at Bekal. The beautiful resort is built on the back waters and one can see the river connecting to the sea. Beautiful plants and flowering trees add to the lush greenery that is Kerala..

The Beautiful Swimming pool  with the palms dotting it, looks so idyllic.

Beautiful Lamps and light adorn the pathways.

Alluring stone carvings greet us in every nook and corner

Lovely Bridges connect the Lobby to the Dining area  and this one is over the river as it connects to the Jiva Spa

The Swings - Zhoola day bed in the room

and the Hammocks in the outside open air

.
The Bekal fort that over looks the Arabian Sea is a beauty on its own

Such beauty. Such peaceful surroundings. Great Weather. What more can one ask for ?

The first post

Bought a home- Check. Getting the interiors done - "on going". This whole phase is such a learning experience for me, that I wanted to share little things that inspire me. Corners of my home. Corners of other people's homes. Decor ideas that inspire. All in all my idea was to use as much locally produced products, or re-cycled or re-used things around my home.  Having bought an apartment in an eco friendly community, has changed the way I look and think about decor.

No Clutter, no hoarding and nothing that would mean too much effort cleaning up, is my target. Looking to hear examples from other readers/bloggers that you can share with me.

Here is the link of how we went about getting our interiors organised.
